Points to Know for Baptismal Preparation

For the Parents:

1. When families present a child for Baptism, the church must be assured and have a reasonable hope that the child will be raised as a Catholic in the Church. While you are not required to be registered in the parish, we do prefer that you are.
2. The parents of an infant (0-8 years old) to be baptized are to be instructed regarding the meaning of Baptism and its obligations.

  • Preparation classes are held monthly on the 1st Monday from 6:30-8:30pm in the Church Classroom.
  • There is no registration for the classes. However, in order to verify your attendance, please sign in at the beginning of the session.
  • This requirement is waived for parents who have taken the classes in the previous 5 years.

3. The Catholic Church promotes the parents as the first and most significant influences in the faith life of children. As such, as you bring your child to be baptized, please reflect upon your need and desire to further your faith life.

  • Our parish offers multiple opportunities for you to grow in your faith and to learn about it more deeply.
    • Adult Education
    • Bible Study
    • Prayer Groups
    • Connections to Retreat Movements
    • Ministry Involvement

For the Godparents/Sponsors:

As you choose your child’s Godparents, you are encouraged to remember that the role of Godparent is as an example in the faith.

The requirements to be a Godparent or Sponsor are:

1. Fully initiated in the Catholic Faith

a. Baptized

b. Confirmed

c. Received Eucharist

2. Currently practicing the Catholic Faith

a. Free from any canonical impediment that prevents full union with the Catholic Church

3. 16 years of age or older

4. While there are normally 2 Godparents, 1 is sufficient.

a. Every person Baptized MUST HAVE AT LEAST 1 GODPARENT or SPONSOR

b. Individuals of another Christian denomination may serve as “Christian Witnesses” to the baptism of your child.

i. Individuals in this situation may not be named as Godparents or Sponsors on the official documentation provided to you by the Church.

ii. Individuals of other faith traditions (Judaism, Buddhist, Islam, etc.) may not be listed either as Godparents or Christian Witnesses. However, such individuals are certainly welcome to attend the celebration of Baptism.

c. When there are 2 Godparents the norm is 1 of each gender.

5. In the Catholic Diocese of Phoenix, it is strongly suggested that Godparents attend the Baptismal preparation classes, but it is not required.

6. Godparents who reside outside of the Diocese of Phoenix must have a letter from their home parish that states that they are active, practicing Catholics, able to serve as Godparents.

Scheduling Your Child’s Baptism:

1. The following must be completed PRIOR to scheduling the Baptism:

a. All paper-work:

i. The Baptism Data Form

ii. The Godparent/Sponsor forms.

b. The preparation class.

2. Upon completion of the above, please call the main parish office, 480-948-8370, and speak with the parish secretary to schedule.

a. Baptisms are normally held on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month following the 10:30 mass (usually around 11:45am).

b. If you are unable to schedule your baptism on one of these days, parish staff members will do our best to assist you in meeting your needs.

i. In most cases, Baptisms are done by a deacon, and following the 10:30 mass on Sundays.

3. Proxy situations for Godparents: In some cases, a Godparent is unable to attend a person’s baptism. Should this be the case, parents may have an individual act as a proxy for the Godparent. The proxy fills in for the actual Godparent and the Godparent is the valid sponsor of the child being baptized.

Baptisms at Another Parish or Out-of-State

1. If your child will be baptized at another parish in the Diocese of Phoenix, you are required to have a letter of permission from the pastor if you are a registered member of the parish.

2. In the event that your child will be baptized in a parish outside of the Diocese of Phoenix, including other states and you are required to have the pastor of the parish send a letter of permission to the parish where the baptism will take place. In this letter, we can also provide a verification of your attendance at the preparation sessions according to the policies of the Diocese of Phoenix.
