Ministry for Social Action (MSA)
Who are we?
- A ministry of parishioners whose purpose is to integrate social justice/action ministry into all aspects of Parish life. This is done through parish formation and social action projects within our parish's ministries and within the community via interfaith connections - i.e. Interfaith Social Action Networking Group and Interfaith Network of Scottsdale. MSA is guided by the challenges and directions provided by Catholic Social Teaching, which are at the heart of our Catholic social tradition.
Catholic Social Teaching:
-
Call to Family, Community, and Participation – We are social beings. The family is the basic cell of society. It must be supported. People have the right and duty to participate in society seeking the common good for all.
-
Rights and Responsibilities – The right to life is fundamental and includes a right to food, clothing, shelter, rest, medical care, religious and political freedom, and essential social services. These rights carry with them responsibilities to one another, our families and to the larger society.
-
Option for and with the Poor and Vulnerable – The story of the Last Judgment (Matthew 25:31-46) instructs us to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first. We must give priority to those most in need of our personal and social resources.
-
The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers – The economy must serve people, not the other way around. Work is a form of continuing participation in God’s creation. Workers have rights to just wages, safe working conditions, forming unions, disability protection, retirement security, and economic initiative.
-
Solidarity – We are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers, wherever they live. To “love our neighbor” has global dimensions in an interdependent world.
-
Care for God’s Creation – We show respect for our creator by our stewardship of creation. It is a requirement of our faith.
